Happy Memorial Day!
Bright and early this morning, I watched as Mary Novitsky and Rose Munday passed on the responsibility of putting up and taking down the American flags to their new volunteer Sally Cunliffe.
Mary and Rose reached out to the Foxfire community for volunteers to take over the task of the American flags during the holidays. Thank you to Sally and her husband Mark for volunteering to take over.
Copy of the story as posted by Mary:
With Memorial Day weekend approaching, we are looking for volunteers willing to take over the responsibility of putting up, taking down and storing the American flags that you also see flying around Tie Road and Foxfire Village on the Fourth of July and Veterans Day weekends.
For about 10 years now, Rose Munday and I have proudly enjoyed this responsibility. Many of you may not be aware that this flag project was begun by and paid for independently, by the now-defunct Foxfire Women’s Association. It’s a private endeavor; it’s not affiliated with the Village Council or the golf course. We position approximately 20 flags; it takes about an hour; and when the flags are taken down and rolled up for storage, they take up about as much space as a bag of golf clubs.
As much as Rose and I hate to admit it, our aging knees and backs are starting to catch up with us, and we are looking to pass this tradition on to another patriotic soul(s).
